F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain - Practice

The British Grand Prix is finally upon us, ladies and gentleman. What a weekend we have in store at Silverstone, as Max Verstappen looks to right his wrongs following last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix crash with Lando Norris.

That collision, which ended Verstappen's hopes of winning the race, has dominated the build-up to the British GP and both Christian Horner and Zak Brown will be desperate for cleaner racing this time round.

Meanwhile, George Russell will be eyeing - albeit unlikely - back-to-back race victories following his surprise triumph last time out. Mercedes have found their form in recent weeks and Lewis Hamilton will be feeling much more positive.

However, their cautious team principal Wolff has sent his Mercedes drivers a reality check heading into their home race, clearly outlining Red Bull and McLaren's superiority.

And Wolff was correct with that assertion as both Norris and his McLaren team0mate Oscar Piastri bagged the quickest times in FP2 at the iconic Silverstone.

Below, Express Sport is on hand to provide you with the latest news from the F1 paddock ahead of the British Grand Prix...

Perez downbeat

Sergio Perez's season is going from bad, to worse.

The Mexican crashed out of Q1 at the British Grand Prix on Saturday after beaching his car in the gravel.

He's reportedly under pressure at Red Bull despite signing a new deal.

"T9 was tricky, really difficult, especially in the beginning, as I was trying to warm up the tyres going into Turn 9, when I downshifted I basically lost the rear end quite badly and I went out of the track," Perez reflected.

“Cold tyres and it was completely soaked of water outside of the track so I just ended up going in the gravel, couldn’t stop the car, couldn’t go straight, very unfortunate incident.”

Verstappen floor update

Max Verstappen damaged his floor during qualifying for the British Grand Prix.

The Dutchman managed to qualify in fourth for Sunday's race nonetheless.

Team boss Christian Horner has confirmed that the team has a spare floor of the same spec available.

Verstappen will have no issues heading into Sunday and he'll be wanting to hunt down Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

Lando ready

Norris is optimistic about challenging the Silver Arrows, though. McLaren appears to be the car to beat at the minute in F1.

"I’m happy with P3, three Brits in the top three is pretty cool here," Norris said following qualifying.

"Good laps by George and Lewis. I want the rain again tomorrow, I’m excited! Bring the fight to George and Lewis. We’re going to have some good battles!”

Hamilton pleased

"Big thanks to this incredible crowd; three Brits in the top three. And congratulations to George, he did such an amazing job," Hamilton said.

"We definitely didn't expect to be front row this weekend but this is huge for us. The car felt fantastic.

"Everyone in the garage, all our team that have come here really deserve this. As I said, the car felt great.

"It was just about getting the tyre temperatures in the right place and sealing the deal when you knew you had the time on track. I think, ultimately, there was still time left on the table - which George was able to find.

"But I feel really confident about the car tomorrow, and with the conditions we have we can work together to keep Lando behind."

Russell speaks

Russell is stepping up to the plate at Mercedes. He has been the Silver Arrows' last two Grand Prix winners.

He stood on top of the podium in Brazil in 2022, and then Austria last weekend following Norris and Verstappen's late double KO.

"What a feeling! At the start of this year we couldn't have dreamt of being on pole here," said Russell.

"One-two for me and Lewis, Lando P3. Just mega. It's down to all these fans as well. They give us so much energy. The car at the moment is feeling so good.

"It really came alive in qualy. What a joy to drive around this circuit. We are riding this wave at the moment.

"Absolutely buzzing. But eyes on tomorrow. We have a race to win. It will be tight with Lando and Max will be fast as well. I'm so excited right now."

Max Verstappen has damage to his car and Red Bull is frantically looking underneath his car.

The Dutchman could suffer in performance, with McLaren and Mercedes looking likely to fight it out for poll.

There's a good chance that the front row could be padded out by Brits.

Verstappen Copse scare

Red Bull is struggling so far as Max Verstappen goes into the gravel but manages to continue.

The Dutchman is only 13th fastest at the moment with two minutes left of Q1.

The track is getting wet. Upsets are possible.

Q1 back underway

First qualifying is back underway and there are drops of rain coming down at Silverstone.

There's cars waiting to exit the pit lane, so the first few fast laps will be crucial for cars on soft tyres.

Lance Stroll has also been noted for leaving the pit exit on a red light. A penalty looks likely for the Canadian Aston Martin driver.

Perez unable to continue

Sergio Perez has been told that his qualifying at the British Grand Prix is over.

He had hoped to get out of the gravel to continue and asked his race engineer. Perez will start Sunday's race towards the back of the grid and he will face a fight to get into the points.

The weather tracker shows rain could be on the way, adding yet another twist to what has already been a wet weekend.

Red Flag

Disaster has struck Red Bull's Sergio Perez at Silverstone for a second year in a row.

The Mexican has ended up in the gravel and Q1 has been red flagged. Perez is reportedly a man under pressure, with Liam Lawson set for Red Bull testing.

Perez requested assistance to get out of the gravel in hopes of continuing qualifying but he's unlikely to have his request granted.

The stage is set for qualifying

Qualiyfing is about to begin at the British Grand Prix.

Can Mercedes keep up their strong form, or will Max Verstappen bounce back and dominate after his Austrian GP disaster?

Adrian Newey's Red Bull agreement

Adrian Newey reportedly won't be able to confirm a possible move to Aston Martin until September at the earliest.

Newey has been heabily tipped to make the move to Red Bull's rivals after confirming his departure from the team.

But Motorsport.com report that Lawrence Stroll will be unable to reveal his signature until September following an agreement between Newey and Red Bull.

Brits dominate FP3

It was a strong final practice session for the Brits at Silverstone, and in particular Mercedes.

George Russell topped FP3 ahead of Lewis Hamilton, while Lando Norris took third.

All eyes on qualifying at 3pm.

RED FLAG!

The red flag is out after Pierre Gasly goes into the gravel.

The Alpine driver spins and gets stuck in the gravel at the Vale chicane.

After a very brief stoppage, we're back underway.

FP3 gets underway

We're underway in FP3 at Silverstone. There are damp conditions still, which could cause some chaos.

Kevin Magnussen is first out on track.

Zak Brown raises Red Bull worries

Zak Brown has admitted he 'would be concerned' if he was Christian Horner.

The McLaren team principal was speaking about Sergio Perez's worrying form just months after signing a new Red Bull contract.

It was reported yesterday by Auto Motor und Sport that Red Bull are weighing up whether to drop Perez.

And Brown has now issued his say: "I would be, which I'm sure they are, very concerned about the lack of performance. But I like Sergio, so I wouldn't want to comment further on that."

Rain causing chaos at Silverstone

There is heavy rain at Silverstone right now, with this morning's F3 sprint race now postponed.

A safety car had been called out in the rain to check the conditions ahead of trying to start the delayed proceedings.

And it was decided to postpone the sprint race ahead of F1 qualifying later.

Toto Wolff hits out at rivals

Toto Wolff has called out his 'one-dimensional' team principal rivals heading into the British GP.

Discussing Lando Norris' collision with Max Verstappen, Wolff criticised the lack of objectivity from his counterparts.

"I tend to agree with Zak [Brown]," Wolff told media at Silverstone. "It's always amusing to see the one-dimensional comments of team principals, where you think, let's be a little bit objective at least."

Zak Brown calls out Red bull

McLaren team principal Zak Brown has dug out Red Bull's leadership team over a general 'lack of respect' in the aftermath of Lando Norris' crash with Max Verstappen.

It continues to be the main talking point heading into this weekend's race at Silverstone. Verstappen refused to take responsibility for the collision and Horner didn't say otherwise either.

But Brown hit back, saying: "Max and Lando were just duking it out as you would expect them to do and until someone tells Max: ‘Hey that’s against the regulations’, he’s not going to know any different and so I think there was missed opportunities for the stewards to make note.

“Also disappointed in such a great team like Red Bull that the leadership almost encourages it because you listen on the radio and what was said… you know we all have a responsibility on pit wall to tell our drivers the dos and don’ts and what’s going on in the race and so I think we need to have respect for regulations.
