Max Verstappen was hit with three £85 fines (€100) for speeding in the pit lane on his reconnaissance laps at the British Grand Prix. On each occasion, the Red Bull star was no more than 0.5 kmp/h over the speed limit.

Explaining their decision, the stewards noted: "Car 1 exceeded the pit lane speed limit which is set at 80 km/h for this event by 0.5 km/h.

"Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits.

"Decisions of the Stewards are taken independently of the FIA and are based solely on the relevant regulations, guidelines and evidence presented."

The Dutchman wasn't the only car caught speeding on the reconnaissance laps. Williams' Alex Albon also breached the regulations, picking up two separate £85 fines for their troubles.

Given their insignificant value, the three fines were little more than a minor inconvenience for Verstappen, who started the race from fourth on the grid following a drama-filled qualifying session on Saturday.

Explaining his struggles, Verstappen told Sky Sports F1: "At Copse, I knew the people in front of me would do a lap time. You think the rain is maybe coming in, you have to put a lap in or you are out in Q1. So I tried to keep a bit of speed up. I did lift but it wasn't enough because it was so slippery that I still had a moment.

"Then you don't want to crash. So I had to go through the dirt and off-line wet bit, skating through the gravel, trying to not hit the wall. But I destroyed the floor.

"From there onwards, it was trying to survive. The team did a great job to try and optimise the losses because you could see they were grinding and trying to optimise every bit because the floor was in a bad state. Initially, I was happy to get into Q3 because the car was a massive step down. To be P4, I'm quite happy with that."
