Mick Schumacher could make a surprise return to Formula One if Logan Sargeant is sacked by Williams next week, according to reports. Sargeant is already set to be replaced by Carlos Sainz at the end of the season but it has been suggested that he could depart ahead of schedule.

The American driver crashed heavily in FP3 at the Dutch Grand Prix, smashing into the barriers after dipping a tyre into the wet grass. He managed to climb out of the car before it burst into flames, ruling him out of qualifying as a result of the chassis damage.

It has been reported that Williams have lost patience with Sargeant and could relieve him of his duties after Sunday's race at Zandvoort. Schumacher, who is currently working for Mercedes as a reserve driver, has been tipped as a potential replacement.

The 25-year-old joined the Silver Arrows in a reserve capacity after he was ditched by Haas at the end of the 2022 season. He reportedly cost the team over £1.7million in damage repairs after crashing on several occasions during his two years on the grid.

It is said that Schumacher could be drafted in by Williams to replace Sargeant if he is axed in the coming days. According to Sky Sports, he would be the 'most likely' candidate to step in as Alex Albon's team-mate until the end of the season.

Williams have also reportedly considered Kimi Antonelli, who is widely expected to replace Lewis Hamilton next year. However, it is said the Silver Arrows have 'zero interest' in allowing the Italian teenager to drive for Williams if Sargeant is sacked.

James Vowles made it clear that he was very frustrated while discussing the implications of Sargeant's heavy crash at the Dutch Grand Prix.

"A hundred people worked on our big upgrade for weeks and worked their fingers sore so that we could use two cars with the new parts, and then everything was ruined within a second," said the Williams team principal.

"It was an unnecessary accident. In the third practice session in the rain, you're not taking full risk. There’s hundreds of hours spent on the update, it looks like it’s working, but there’s few of them in the world.

"Really, the worst time is when you’ve just introduced it with small amounts of bits and put it into the wall at the circuit."
