Mercedes have confirmed that Kimi Antonelli will drive George Russell's car in FP1 at this weekend's Italian Grand Prix. Antonelli is widely expected to replace Lewis Hamilton next year and will get an opportunity to impress at the iconic Monza circuit.

In a statement released on Monday, it was confirmed that Antonelli will be making his FP1 debut this weekend with George Russell sitting out. Mercedes also said that Hamilton would miss a session later in the year to give Antonelli another chance behind the wheel.

Reacting to the news, Antonelli said: "Taking part in my first FP1 is going to be really special. I'm really excited to drive the W15 and share the track with so many amazing drivers. I can't wait for it."

The Italian teenager, who celebrated his 18th birthday last week, is almost certain to step into Hamilton's seat on a full-time basis next season. He is currently racing in Formula Two, having been fast-tracked into the series after winning last year's FRECA Championship.

Toto Wolff recently appeared to confirm that Antonelli had already signed with Mercedes to replace Hamilton next year. The Silver Arrows team principal gave the game away with a slip of the tongue during an interview ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.

"Soon, we will confirm who is in the second seat," said Wolff. "And what I also said is that the two drivers that are in the car have our full support, 100 per cent.

"Therefore, I'm entering the season in 2025 with two drivers that we will be given all the opportunity to perform, and that's why I don't want to talk about the 2026 driver line-up at that stage because I want to make it work with George and Kimi."

If Antonelli joins Mercedes next year, he will become the third-youngest driver in F1 history behind only Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll. Oliver Bearman currently holds that place in the record books after filling in for Carlos Sainz at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in March.

Mercedes have openly courted Max Verstappen in recent months but any potential move for the Dutchman would appear to be a non-starter. He remains tied down to Red Bull until 2028 and has repeatedly insisted that he is happy in his current surroundings.
