Arsenal news: Is this the clue Unai Emery will play Danny Welbeck in shock new position?
ARSENAL manager Unai Emery has hinted he could shock fans by playing Danny Welbeck at left-back against Manchester City today.
The Spaniard is readying his side for his first competitive game for the north London outfit against the Premier League champions this afternoon.
Arsenal brought in five players over the summer but failed to strengthen in attack or down the left-hand side of his squad.
To add, regular full-backs Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal are ruled out for the visit of Pep Guardiola's men, which could lead to Emery being forced to change players' position at the Emirates on Sunday.
And speaking earlier this week, the new Arsenal boss admitted Welbeck has been impressing in defence for the Gunners.
Right-winger, left-winger, striker, and also yesterday he worked with us at left-back - his performance was good
“Danny Welbeck is one of the players who has a multi-position possibility,” Emery said.
“Right-winger, left-winger, striker, and also yesterday he worked with us at left-back - his performance was good!
"I like this spirit.
"To help positions across the team with positive spirit.”
Welbeck was heavily linked with a move away from Arsenal this summer but now appears to be part of Emery's plans this term.
“I said to him [Welbeck] when he arrived back with us after the holidays that I want the best performances of his career - and to work hard for that,” he added.
“We'll be helping him improve his quality this year.
"More goals, more assists, working to help when we need quick pressing against the opposition.
“For me it's clear.
"The transfer window is closed and our players will stay with us.”
David Ospina, Carl Jenkinson and Joel Campbell have all been told to look for a new club before the end of the non-English transfer window which closes at the end of the month.
Arsenal welcome Man City to the Emirates on Sunday afternoon (4pm).
