Man Utd news: Pep Guardiola revelation made about Jose Mourinho’s limitations
JOSE MOURINHO will never change Manchester United’s style as he is stuck in his own ways.
Jose Mourinho admits he still does not know his best back four
That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit Danny Murphy, who watched Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham on Monday.
United’s start to their season took another turn for the worse when they were swept aside by Spurs, who claimed their first win at Old Trafford for nearly five years.
Mourinho has been continually criticised for his side’s bland style and for not playing with enough pace or penetration at times.
And Murphy thinks that while United boast a very good squad, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is more innovative so can extract the best attacking football from his group of players which Mourinho can’t match.
You can’t just say to a group out of players go out and play free
“I’ve worked with great coaches who do one thing really well,” Murphy said when discussing Mourinho’s tactics on Sky Sports’ The Debate.
“When people watch Man City, they say: ‘they’ve got great players’.
“It’s no coincidence that they spread the pitch and rotate positions and split.
“All that stuff is Pep [Guardiola]. It’s worked on day in and day out.
“It’s like a well oiled machine. It’s not just them going ‘oh we’re good players’.
“It’s easy to say they [City] go and play free.
“Guardiola gives them the confidence and the shape and the platform to do it.
“Because Mourinho has never really done it, can he coach United to do it?
“You can’t just say to a group out of players go out and play free.”
United will be hoping to bounce back when they travel to face Burnley on Sunday (4pm).
