Chelsea news: David Luiz challenges teammates after stunning Daniel Sturridge goal
CHELSEA defender David Luiz has spoken of his disappointment in conceding a late goal in their Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday.
The 31-year-old put in an impressive performance as Eden Hazard gave the Blues the lead in the first-half.
Chelsea were on the verge of recording a second victory over Jurgen Klopp’s men in as many games, before a stunning long-distance strike from Daniel Sturridge saw the match end in a 1-1 draw.
“It is frustrating when you do those kind of things and then you concede a goal at the end, but we have to admit it was a great shot for the equaliser,” Luiz said.
“It was also a great game. Both sides played really, really well, two great coaches and teams, many fantastic players. It was great for those people watching.”
The season is long, it’s just the beginning. Let’s continue to play
Luiz believes Chelsea still have room to improve, as it’s early in the season.
“We tried to do our best to win the game and we continue to work hard every day,” Luiz said.
“The season is long, it’s just the beginning. Let’s continue to play.”
The Brazilian claims Hazard, who has scored six goals and two assists in seven Premier League games, is one of the greatest stars he has ever played with.
“He’s one of the best for sure,” Luiz said.
“What he is doing is great. I am so happy for him.
“He’s a big friend and a big player, and he had another amazing game. He is doing better and better every week.”
After seven games into the season Chelsea sit third in the Premier League, two points behind Manchester City and Liverpool.
David Luiz shares skills training during Chelsea break
The Blues replaced Antonio Conte in the summer with the 59-year-old Italian Maurizio Sarri and the former Napoli boss has given Luiz a leading role in the heart of his defence.
Luiz is full of praise for his new coach and his tactical approach to the game.
“Sarri is trying to introduce his philosophy every single day,” Luiz said.
“We are trying to learn that as quickly as possible because it’s a great philosophy: try to play every single second with the ball on the ground, quick movements, passes, possession.”
