Manchester United are primed to splash the cash this summer and fresh reports have suggested that Norwich defender Godfrey is in their sights.
The Red Devils are widely expected to sign a new centre-back when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.
Manchester United are primed to cut Marcos Rojo loose, while there are also question marks surrounding the future of Eric Bailly, who has failed to develop into the player many foresaw.
Godfrey has impressed for Norwich in the Championship, helping Daniel Farke’s side to the top of the table.
And The Sun say the 21-year-old has now made his way onto United’s transfer radar for the summer.
It is claimed the Red Devils are hopeful an offer of £10million will be enough to get a transfer done.
United watched Godfrey impress as Norwich beat Rotherham 2-1 on March 16, with scouts happy with what they saw.
And The Sun say the Red Devils are hoping that the defender can be the next Smalling.
Smalling signed for United from Fulham in 2010.
He has since become an integral part of the side under different managers Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And, as a homegrown player, United are hoping Godfrey can following Smalling’s lead.
News of United weighing up a move for the Norwich powerhouse come at a time where:
- Real Madrid’s interest in Paul Pogba has been explained.
- United could stop Sadio Mane from joining Real Madrid.
- One player has complicated a transfer for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.
Meanwhile, Godfrey is not the only defender United are considering when the transfer window reopens.
Raphael Varane remains a dream target for Ed Woodward.
And so too does Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, who could cost as much as £150m to sign.
Who United end up with, though, is something only time will tell.
