Manchester United are tempted by the £25million release clause in Alderweireld’s Tottenham contract as they look to bring in defensive reinforcements during the summer.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to overhaul his squad but Alderweireld isn’t his preferred choice to bring to Old Trafford, with the Norwegian preferring to invest in young players.
Solskjaer would prefer to retain his current centre-backs and use his coaching ability to turn their form around, reports The Sun.
However, Untied’s hierarchy are still considering signing the 30-year-old Belgium international given the amount he can be obtained for.

Few would disagree that United need to improve at the back, with the club failing to keep a clean sheet in their final 15 games of the season.
They conceded more goals than any of the other teams in the top nine of the table and let in 31 more goals than Premier League winners and bitter rivals Manchester City.
Alderweireld will soon be entering the final 12 months of his contract but refused to be drawn into speculation about his future ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League final against Liverpool.
"I've been focused on Spurs from day one until now," he told the Evening Standard.

One player that could move up the ranks at United next season is Axel Tuanzebe.
The backroom staff at United think the 21-year-old centre-back could be the answer to United’s current defensive woes and have pleaded with Solskjaer to consider him next season.

United are reportedly willing to give Tuanzebe an opportunity to show how far he has developed during this summer's pre-season tour of Australia, China, and Singapore.
Another player who could be on his way to United is Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot.
Although the French midfielder has fallen out of favour at the club, because he will be available on a free transfer in the summer it is expected a bidding war will take place to secure the service of the 24-year-old.
