Subbed Rooney in rage
WAYNE ROONEY was involved in angry scenes after being hauled off against Besiktas last night.
He stalked from the field and became involved in an exchange with home fans behind the dugout after they taunted him.
Rooney then flung one of his boots to the ground in frustration as he sat on the bench.
But Sir Alex Ferguson gave Rooney the thumbs-up to carry on moaning after seeing his side clinch a vital away win thanks to Paul Scholes’ 77th-minute header .
“He is never pleased to come off,” Ferguson said.
“Wayne has the kind of energy that means he wants to play all the time.”
United’s players had to endure a fiery atmosphere in Istanbul and were targeted by a fan with a laser pen.
Ferguson said: “It was a problem for the players in the first half, when Jonny Evans was getting it in his eyes. But the police got the culprit at half-time.
“It is always good to win away from home and a real challenge because of the atmosphere in the stadium.
“I have never heard a noise as loud in a football ground. The home fans were fantastic and the noise never stopped all night. We had to deal with that and we did. We showed good composure and good concentration.”
Rooney did the donkey work for more than an hour before sitting back in frustration to watch Scholes head in the rebound after a shot from Nani was parried, giving United an ideal start in their bid to bury the disappointment of last season’s Champions League final defeat.
He is never pleased to come off
“It was a good goal scored after some good football,” Ferguson said. “
Nani got in a good shot but Scholes, being Scholes, scored from the rebound with a typical goal.”
Ferguson also praised £18 million signing Antonio Valencia, who was making his his Champions League debut.
He said: “Valencia was always a threat. He got to the goal line – but his final ball could have been better.”
