Axe spells the end for Robert Green
Fabio Capello’s decision to axe Robert Green against Algeria could mean the end of the error-prone keeper’s England career.
That’s the warning from Alex Stepney, who was on the bench in Mexico 1970 when Peter Bonetti endured his own World Cup nightmare against West Germany.
Bonetti was widely blamed for England’s quarter-final exit 40 years ago – and never played for his country again.
Now, after his own howler against America in Rustenburg, Green is facing up to a similar fate.
“It could be the end of him,” said ex-Manchester United keeper Stepney.
“It was a basic mistake and you can’t do that sort of thing when you’re playing for your country, especially in the World Cup.”
