Tottenham are getting a player as good as prime Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane in the form of Timo Werner, according to one of his ex-Chelsea teammates. The German striker joined the Blues from RB Leipzig for £47.5m in 2020, signing a five-year deal, but two years later he was on his way back to his former club having failed to make the desired impact.
The 27-year-old Germany international has only made eight appearances in the Bundesliga this season but has now broken back into the Premier League after joining Spurs on loan until the end of the season.
Ange Postecoglou will be hoping that his new signing will be able to recapture the goalscoring form that earned him a move to Chelsea in the first place and according to Werner's ex-Stamford Bridge teammate Ben Chilwell, the North London club will be getting a player with qualities comparable to come of the best strikers to have played in the Premier League.
Speaking about Werner when he was still at Chelsea, Chilwell told Soccer AM at the time: "I’d already say he’s up there with them two [Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy] and he can definitely go on to be absolutely world-class for a long time for the next 10 years or so.
"I think when you look at his age and how prolific he is in front of goal, even now his start to Chelsea he’s scored a lot of goals already. Just in front of goal he’s so good.
"He has similar characteristics to both Vards and Harry to be fair. In terms of running the channels and how quick he is it’s similar to Vards. With Harry his link-up play and his finishing is similar. He’s definitely in a category with them two."
Werner hit double figures in all competitions in both of his seasons with Chelsea but paid the price for a low return in the Premier League and was routinely criticised for missing chances regularly.
The huge turnover of players at Chelsea following the arrival of new owner Todd Boehly eventually led to Werner being sold back to Leipzig just two years into a five-year contract.

Postecoglou, who will be without his main goal supply Son Heung-min, whilst he is away on Asian Cup duty with South Korea, will be hoping that he gets the Werner that Chilwell has described as opposed to the one who was forced out of Stamford Bridge.
Should things go well, Spurs have the added benefit of an option to make his move permanent at the end of the season.
Werner could make his Spurs debut against Manchester United on Saturday.
