Jurgen Klopp makes Liverpool offer as German drops hint in emotional press conference
Jurgen Klopp made an offer to Liverpool in his final press conference as head coach.
Jurgen Klopp has promised the city of Liverpool that he will always be there to help even after leaving Anfield. The German bid farewell in an emotional final press conference on Friday before taking charge of his last game as Reds head coach on Sunday.
Liverpool host Wolves at Anfield in what will be an opportunity for Klopp to wave goodbye to the home crowd. The 56-year-old has formed a special bond during his nine years at Liverpool.
Klopp received the Freedom of the City of Liverpool in 2022, honouring his achievements with the club. He promised the community that he will always provide help to the city when they need.
"I said it before, I got the key of the city and for some it might be rather funny," Klopp said. "For me, it feels like responsibility. I don't think the club will need me in the future but if the city needs me, I'm there. I want to be helpful in whatever way.”
Klopp has also apologised to supporters to whom he promised he would stay until 2028. He then said that one letter prompted him to burst into tears during a session with the club’s in-house media channel.
Asked to explain his relationship with the supporters: “I can't. I try to explain why the people like me so much. I don't understand it properly. We never really disappointed them. The club is special, the club means the world to so many people. Emails, letters, if I answer them all I'm here until 2028.
“I apologise. I couldn't sort tickets for the last game, there were a lot of requests. LFC TV had me read letters yesterday. With one, I burst into tears. Football changes lives and I know that. We did that.
“Experience is there to learn from. Keep doing it for the next manager and you will feel the same way. We have very special supporters. The last nine years meant the world to them. I'm happy about that.”
Klopp was able to forge a bond with supporters of former clubs Mainz and Borussia Dortmund. However, he explains that he did not plan his relationship with Liverpool fans.
He continued: “I had a good relationship at Mainz with the people. For them it was the hardest because they saw me 11 years playing! We created a really special bond at Dortmund as well. We never planned it but I like it a lot.
“It makes football really enjoyable. Because the people love it so much, we play in fantastic stadiums, earn a lot of money. You have to experience that together. I never understood, we are the ambassadors of the people. We have to fulfil their dreams.
“That's why I understand the people love that time but I never expected it to happen because you never know how the people will take it. Our thoughts fitted like a glove with the people.”
