The seven Premier League stars most annoyed with Southgate including big fallout

England manager Gareth Southgate has omitted a whole host of star players from his provisional Euro 2024 squad.

Gareth Southgate has risked upsetting a whole host of star Premier League players after snubbing the likes of Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford and Chelsea maestro Raheem Sterling from his Euro 2024 squad.

The Three Lions boss named his provisional squad on Tuesday afternoon, with the final 26-man squad set to be announced on Saturday, June 8.

Southgate is desperate to win a major trophy as England manager after leading his country to the Euro 2020 final three years ago. He also oversaw a run to the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup and a quarter-final finish at the 2022 World Cup.

But it appears he would now prefer to put his faith in a whole host of fresh faces instead of backing some of his most tried and trusted players for another tournament. And Express Sport takes a look at some of the stars who will be most annoyed by the Three Lions boss.

Marcus Rashford won’t get the opportunity to add to his England caps in Germany after being snubbed by Southgate. The 26-year-old, who hit the post with a penalty shootout effort in the Euro 2020 final, has endured an awful campaign with Man Utd and has netted just eight goals in all competitions.

Jordan Henderson is paying for his decision to quit Liverpool in favour of a move to Saudi Arabia after being axed by Southgate. The 33-year-old, who has captained England on a string of occasions left the Middle East just months into his Al-Ettifaq career and now plays for Ajax rather than a Premier League outfit.

Raheem Sterling has slipped down the pecking order at Chelsea and played a bit-part role for the club towards the end of the season as the Blues improved their form. The 29-year-old won’t be on the plane to Germany, despite featuring for England at the last five major tournaments.

Only two Englishmen have scored more Premier League goals than Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke during the 2023/24 campaign. But his 19 strikes and breathtaking form weren’t enough to convince Southgate to include the 26-year-old in his Euro 2024 squad.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope spent the second half of the campaign on the sidelines with a shoulder injury, before starting the Magpies’ final clash of the season at Brentford last weekend. But his return to action apparently came too late for Southgate, who has preferred Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, Dean Henderson and James Trafford.

Mason Mount started two matches at the 2022 World Cup and used to be a regular in Southgate’s squads. But the 25-year-old has suffered a downturn of form amid a series of injury problems at Manchester United. He has struggled to have a positive impact on a Red Devils team that finished eighth this season but may be annoyed the England manager won’t be giving him a chance to shine this summer.

Ben Chilwell started both of England’s friendlies in March but clearly didn’t do enough to impress Southgate following an injury-hit campaign which saw him feature just 13 times in the Premier League. Luke Shaw will be favourite to start in Germany, while Joe Gomez and Kieran Trippier can also cover the left-back position.

Ben White famously left the England camp during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and then made himself unavailable for the Three Lions’ friendlies in March. So, despite enjoying a fine season with Arsenal, the 26-year-old won’t be surprised to be left out.
