Marcus Rashford issues immediate response after Man Utd ace snubbed by England
Marcus Rashford has been left out of England's provisional squad for Euro 2024.
Marcus Rashford has responded on social media after being left out of the provisional England squad for Euro 2024. Gareth Southgate has named 33 players for a training camp ahead of the tournament in Germany, with Rashford joined by Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling in being among the notable omissions.
The 26-year-old responded swiftly after the official England team Instagram account confirmed the squad. He shared the post and added the caption: "Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament."
The Man Utd forward has endured a difficult 2023/24 campaign, scoring just seven goals and notching two assists in his 33 Premier League appearances. But he still featured seven times for England before being left out for the friendly against Belgium in March.
The blow comes amid uncertainty over his club future, having been accused of a lack of effort and application last season by critics. PSG have now been linked with a big money bid this summer, despite Rashford only last year signing a lucrative new deal to make him United's highest paid player.
He has also not started a match since last month’s FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City. He will be likely to be involved though when the Red Devils look to end a disappointing campaign on a high note in the FA Cup final against Man City on Saturday.
Rashford has featured in England's last four major tournaments, playing in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup as well as Euro 2016 and the delayed Euro 2021. It was in the latter where he missed a penalty in the shootout as the Three Lions lost in the final to Italy, but until now, Southgate continued to show faith with the player who has 17 goals in 60 international appearances.
Instead, the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have all been preferred as forward options. Southgate has also placed faith in uncapped players like Jarrad Branthwaite, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah and Adam Wharton.

Henderson meanwhile, has missed out after a season which saw him move from Liverpool to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia and then Ajax. Initially, Southgate continued to pick him after his move to the Middle East, before leaving him out of the last two games against Brazil and then the Belgians.
Southgate will be required to trim his squad to 26 players ahead of travelling to Germany. England's opening tournament game takes place in Serbia on June 16.
