Rasmus Hojlund has fired back at claims that his Manchester United team-mates were reluctant to pass to him after being left unconvinced by his quality. The Denmark striker finished his maiden season at United as the club's top goalscorer, netting 16 times in 43 appearances, but went through periods of struggle.

Hojlund arrived in a £72million deal from Atalanta with the expectancy that the Red Devils were signing a raw talent with plenty of room to grow.

A dismal second season under Erik ten Hag intensified the adversity the 21-year-old faced after landing in England, but his price tag automatically welcomed scrutiny.

Hojlund has shown glimpses of pure class in his first season at Old Trafford and was named the Premier League Player of the Month in February after notching five goals in four games.

During that run, he became the competition's youngest-ever player to score in six consecutive matches.

But it hasn't all been smooth sailing for Hojlund. It took the starlet until Boxing Day to score his first league goal, the winner in a 3-2 thriller against Aston Villa.

He also managed to score just once in 10 games after returning from a month-long injury spell in March, which disrupted his previous rampant run of form.

However, he finished the season strongly with goals off the bench in United's final two league outings and played his part as a substitute in last Saturday's 13th FA Cup victory.

Hojlund's form in the latter stages of the season sparked reports claiming that his team-mates were looking for alternative options in the final third.

One player was said to have admitted to a close confidant that the new arrival had been ignored when the team searched for goalscoring opportunities.

However, while admitting he had occasionally been left frustrated last season, Hojlund has strongly rubbished those reports.

"I do not understand such an article. I feel like I get the ball if I'm in the right positions," Hojlund told Tipsbladet.

"I would have liked to get the ball a bit more sometimes, but that's just not always possible.

"This is, again, an example of something I have to shut out because it's just a lot of noise. You have to filter out the stories because 90 to 95 per cent of them are nonsense."

Hojlund will represent Denmark at this summer's Euro 2024, pitted in a group with England, Slovenia and Serbia.

United are expected to sign a new striker this summer to replace Anthony Martial and provide their No. 11 with the much-needed support and competition he was left without last term.
