Liverpool boss Arne Slot has the Premier League’s best player in Alexis Mac Allister, according to Reds forward Diogo Jota. Jurgen Klopp was a huge fan of the Argentine midfielder and Slot will now reap the benefits of having a World Cup winner in his squad.

Slot is set to run the rule over his Liverpool players in the first few weeks of pre-season. But the Dutchman should be in no doubt over Mac Allister’s quality.

A bargain £35million signing from Brighton 12 months ago, the 25-year-old played in 33 Premier League matches during his debut campaign. His versatility was key for Klopp, occupying several positions.

That will be useful for Slot, too. And if the incoming Anfield chief needs any more reason to make the most of having Mac Allister, Liverpool forward Jota has surprisingly named him the Premier League’s best player.

The Portugal forward was asked the key question by Goal. He immediately responded: “Mac Allister.”

Klopp was a huge fan of Mac Allister and was keen to prise him away from Brighton. The German used him as a deep-lying midfielder, as a box-to-box midfielder, and as a more advanced playmaker at Anfield last season.

“How can you not love a player like him? Or a boy like him? He’s incredible,” Klopp said of Mac Allister in April.

“He’s educated in the best possible way. He’s really polite, confident, funny, smart – and an incredible footballer. Oh my God!

“You watch training sessions and the coaches look at each other like, ‘Wow, what was that?’ And only from time to time you see it in games as well – [because] first and foremost we train still more often than we play.

“How he interacts with the other boys, how he took the South American outfield player department under his wings naturally, without telling them what to do but just how they came together. It’s wonderful.”

Slot has inherited a strong squad from Klopp and will seek to maintain a Premier League title challenge in 2024-25. The 45-year-old has been appointed after catching the eye at Feyenoord with a direct, attacking style.

Mac Allister will be key in Slot’s philosophy. The new head coach will benefit from the player’s excellent passing and play-making ability.

The former Boca Juniors star has a contract until 2028, meaning he is likely to play a part in Slot’s long-term plans.
