New Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany is preparing to ‘raid’ Liverpool to make Joe Gomez his first signing at the German club, it has been claimed. The 38-year-old was officially unveiled as the manager of the Bundesliga giants last week, succeeding Thomas Tuchel.

That’s despite the 38-year-old failing to keep Burnley in the Premier League last season, the Clarets finishing 19th and eight points adrift of safety.

And he’s immediately turned his attention to the versatile 27-year-old, who covered both full back positions as well as the centre of defence for the Reds in the 2023/24 campaign. That's according to the Mirror.

He eventually made 51 appearances in all competitions, with his form duly rewarded at international level by England manager Gareth Southgate. Gomez has been named in the 26-man squad that travelled to Germany for Euro 2024, and could yet play a critical starting role as Southgate sweats on the fitness of John Stones.

However, prying Gomez away from Merseyside could prove a difficult task for the Belgian. The Charlton youth product arrived at Anfield in 2015, and has since made 224 appearances for the club.

Under Jurgen Klopp, he helped the club land every major domestic trophy, as well as the Champions League, European Super Cup, and FIFA World Club Cup. And Liverpool chiefs reportedly see him as an important long-term figure in the new era under Arne Slot.

He only signed a new five-year deal back in 2022, meaning Liverpool are in no rush to make a sale with the player not eligible to leave on a free transfer for a further three years. His current contract reportedly does not contain a release clause.

And he isn’t the only defensive reinforcement Kompany is looking at. Bayern have also been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, as well as Bayer Leverkusen’s German international Jonathan Tah.

In his opening press conference with his new club, the former Manchester City captain also dropped a major hint on the type of players he was looking at in the transfer window. And he implied he would be continuing with the style of play that initially saw him lead Burnley to the top flight.

“I want the players at Bayern Munich to be brave, to have personality on the ball," he said. "But also my nature is to be aggressive and I want them to be progressive and represent those two things in my character.

"I want to find out how hungry the players are," he said."Bayern didn't become champions last year, I'm familiar with that situation too. I'll look at which players are hungry enough to play for FC Bayern."
