England got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a winning start last night with Jude Bellingham's early goal proving to be the difference against Serbia. Gareth Southgate's men had to dig deep in the second half but they weathered the storm to claim all three points in Gelsenkirchen.

It was far from a vintage England display but they got the job done, with the result extending Southgate's perfect record in the opening games of major tournaments. However, there is little doubt that his side will need to improve to stand the best chance of going deep into the competition.

Three more games will take place later today, with Romania going up against Ukraine before Slovakia take on Belgium. France will also be in action this evening when they face Austria in a clash they will be firmly expected to win.

Lukaku decision explained

Former referee Christina Unkel has explained why Romelu Lukaku's late equaliser for Belgium against Slovakia was ruled out.

Lois Openda was controversially deemed to have handled the ball in the build-up, despite contact appearing unintentional.

Unkel, who has been providing refereeing analysis for ITV, explained: "The deliberate interpretation has changed recently. However, this is still going to be considered a deliberate handling offence for the fact that the arm is near or above the shoulder level.

"Even though he is running at momentum, because the arm is extended, that touch we saw helps him control the ball.

"Those considerations are the ones that are going to point to it being considered unnatural from the referee’s interpretation, and the guidance and in the referee’s preferred decision, from not just Uefa but from IFAB as well."

France 1-0 Austria

It's taken 38 minutes, but France lead.

The brilliance of Kylian Mbappe creates the goal, darting past his marker before delivering a cross which Max Wober turns into his own net.

Scotland star banned

Scotland defender Ryan Porteous' tournament could be over after he was banned for the next two group matches.

A UEFA statement confirmed they would "suspend Scottish Football Association player, Ryan Porteous, for a total of two (2) UEFA representative team competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible, for serious rough play."

The Watford man was sent off in the Euro 2024 opener against Germany, and won't play again if Scotland fail to make the last-16.

Szoboszlai infuriates Liverpool fans

Hungary midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has irked Liverpool supporters with his comments ahead of Hungary’s Euro 2024 defeat to Switzerland.

The 23-year-old suggested not playing much for his club in the latter stages of last season was a good thing.

"I've just finished a difficult season, but since this was my first in the Premier League, I'm not dissatisfied with my performance, although I definitely want to have a better," he said, via the Hungarian Football Federation.

"It didn't bother me that I played a smal role at Liverpool at the end of the season. At least the chance of injury was lower and I could focus on the European Championship earlier."

Belgium goal ruled out

Belgium think they are level when Romelu Lukaku turns in Jeremy Doku's header across goal - but it's then chalked off after a VAR check.

Half time: Belgium 0-1 Slovakia

We;ve reached halfway and Slovakia hold the lead thanks to Ivan Schranz scoring, after Koen Casteels had parried Juraj Kucka's effort.

Final score: Romania 3-0 Ukraine

There goes the final whistle and cue some scenes!

The whole squad flood on to the pitch, while some players have headed to the stands to celebrate with their families.

It's Romania's first win in the tournament for 24 years, and their biggest ever margin of victory at a European Championships.

Romania 3-0 Ukraine

And now Denis Dragus taps in from close range.

After 57 minutes, this is shaping up to be a famous day in Romania's football history.

Romania 2-0 Ukraine

Wow!

Razvan Marin fires in low from 20 yards out. Another stunning strike and Romania double their lead. Again though, Lunin should go better, the ball seemingly to under his gloves.

Nicolae Stanciu scores stunner as Romania lead Ukraine

Romania are a goal to the good against Ukraine in today's opening fixture courtesy of a worldie from Nicolae Stanciu.

He capitalises on a stray pass from Ukraine stopper Andriy Lunin to smash a first-time rocket into the top corner from well outside the box.

The hordes of Romanian fans behind the goal are going mad and for good reason.

Surely an early contender for goal of the tournament?

Gary Lineker and BBC crew attacked by hornets

Gary Lineker and his fellow BBC pundits were on the receiving end of a hornet 'attack' during England's game against Serbia.

Lineker, fronting the coverage, revealed at half-time that he and his colleagues had come under attack from a swarm of hornets.

"Second half, we’re looking forward to that," he said before describing the scenes that were unfolding outside. "We’ve been attacked by big hornets flying around…"

Gareth Southgate provides England injury update

Gareth Southgate has revealed there are no new injury concerns in the England camp following last night's win over Serbia.

Kieran Tripper received treatment on the sidelines after going down at one stage but recovered to complete the full 90 minutes.

"Kieran was just cramp," said Southgate. "As far as I know everyone has come through well."

Luke Shaw is still working his way back to full fitness and will be hoping to feature in some capacity against Denmark.

Graeme Souness shares Alan Hansen update

Graeme Souness has revealed that he has spoken to Alan Hansen on the phone and hopes that he will make a full recovery.

Hansen, who played alongside Souness at Liverpool for many years, was admitted to hospital earlier this month after falling 'seriously ill'.

Souness, who is in Germany covering Euro 2024, told talkSPORT: "I spoke to him yesterday and he sounded fabulous so I hope that’s him on the way to a full recovery.

"He’s definitely back because he did nothing but take the Mickey out of me! I’ve been speaking to his son and Janet his wife and I’ve been phoning his phone number.

"I got on the train on Sunday and I was looking for my seat and my phone rang and I could see it was Big Al. I was thinking: ‘Oh no, don’t answer that’.

"So I sat down and got the courage to phone back and he answered the phoned. He’s been in a difficult place but the way he sounded yesterday, he’s back, and I hope I’m right."

Roy Keane picks surprise 'dark horses'

Roy Keane has named Switzerland as the dark horses of Euro 2024 following their comfortable win over Hungary in Group A.

The Irishman, who is covering the tournament as a pundit on ITV, paused for a moment before announcing his pick.

"I think Switzerland are no mugs," he said.

"Whether they can go on and win it, but I think they could definitely get to the latter stages."

England fans caught in travel chaos

A large number of England fans were left waiting for several hours at Gelsenkirchen train station last night.

Many trains either did not turn up or were delayed, leaving hordes of people stranded on the platform.

Footage on social media showed there were still large queues around three hours after England's narrow victory over Serbia.

Before the match, groups of England fans were prevented from boarding some trains which had Serbia supporters on them.

Erik ten Hag questions Gareth Southgate tactics

Erik ten Hag has accused Gareth Southgate of adopting a negative approach after England took an early lead against Serbia.

The United boss, who is working as a pundit for Dutch channel NOS at the Euros, was left unimpressed with England's game plan last night.

He said: "England were playing very passive. I actually saw them moving backwards, they kept Serbia coming at them.

"It's the vision of the manager. England will take a 1-0 lead, then he decides to start gambling with making his team compact and relying on moments for the remaining minutes of the game."

BBC pundits banned from making comments

Gary Lineker scolded Micah Richards for suggesting football could be 'coming home' during last night's England coverage before banning the famous phrase.

Discussing England's chances of winning the tournament, Richards said: "Harmony in the squad has been brilliant, just now with this emerging talent, if we could just bring it home..."

Lineker quickly interjected, saying: "Here we go… that’s banned, that’s bad luck that thing… don’t say it!"

The BBC host also banned Cesc Fabregas from comparing Jude Bellingham to Lionel Messi during the post-match analysis.

Asked if he had played with any young players who had already been deemed captain material, the Spaniard replied: "Messi, if we are allowed to talk about him."

Lineker quickly shut down Fabregas while Rio Ferdinand pointed into the distance and said: "He's way over there somewhere!"
