Rangers in disarray as Charles Green quits
RANGERS were thrown into turmoil again last night as the London Stock Exchange were told chief executive Charles Green was to resign from his position.
The Yorkshireman took the decision to step down after “negative publicity” in recent weeks over his consortium’s acquisition of the club last summer, but “strenuously denies any wrongdoing”.
The Rangers board announced last week plans for an independent investigation following claims by former owner Craig Whyte he was involved in Green’s takeover.
Recent events have undoubtedly been a distraction for both myself and all involved with Rangers
Whyte alleged links with Green and commercial director Imran Ahmad when their consortium completed the purchase last summer.
Green – who recently apologised after being charged by the SFA for allegedly using “racist and offensive language” – refuted the allegations by Whyte, who was in charge when the club plunged into administration and subsequently liquidation.
Green said in a statement: “Recent events have undoubtedly been a distraction for both myself and all involved with Rangers and I feel it is appropriate I step down so the club can continue to progress back to where it belongs – at the pinnacle of Scottish football.”
