Derk Boerrigter lured to Celtic by Champions League run
NEIL LENNON believes Celtic’s Champions League campaign last term helped them land £3million winger Derk Boerrigter.
The Ajax flier, right, has signed a four-year contract and, assuming international clearance comes through, he’ll be available for tonight’s Champions League clash.
Lennon insists luring players from one of Europe’s greatest clubs shows how attractive a proposition Celtic is now. He said: “He hasn’t come from Scunthorpe, Beerschot or Honduras. He has come from a quality side. He did really well at previous club Waalwijk, prompting Frank de Boer to shell out for him.
“He probably hasn’t played as much football as he would have liked to but coming here, with his style of play and the way we want to play, will suit him.
“I would think the Champions League is a factor in him coming here. Off the back of what we achieved last season, we are maybe a bit more attractive.”
Lennon believes flying left-winger Boerrigter will give Celtic a better balance, adding: “He is the type of player we have been after for quite a while – pacy and predominantly left-sided.
“He also has goals in him. He has been playing for a quality side for the last couple of years, so I’m really pleased we’ve got him.
“He has a bit of an ankle problem so we will assess him tomorrow.”
