O’Flaherty combated a recent report published by City AM, which said McIlroy's move to the Saudi-backed golf league could be imminent and would include around two percent equity in the competition. His manager responded to the news via email to the Irish Independent, saying, “Fake news. Zero truth."
The reports sparked intriguing discussions about the potential of McIlroy departing from the PGA Tour. His previous criticisms of the league have evolved significantly over time, initially staunchly backing the PGA Tour and criticising players who joined LIV Golf. He even said he would rather retire from the game before joining LIV, even if they were the only option.

More recently, McIlroy has come to acknowledge the positive influence of LIV Golf, a shift in his perspective that has not gone unnoticed. He has also taken the opportunity to critique certain aspects of the PGA Tour, which has sparked further discussion. His remarks on The Overlap expressed regret for his past judgment of LIV, providing clarity after initially expressing disdain for the organisation.
"I was maybe a little judgmental of the guys who went to LIV Golf at the start," he said. "I think it was a bit of a mistake because I now realize that not everyone is in my position or Tiger Woods position.”
"I’ve spent the last two years with this altruistic approach, looking at the world the way I want to see it. Ultimately, you can say what you want and do what you want, but at the end of the day, you’re not going to be able to change people’s minds," he continued. You’re never going to make them decide based on what you say.”
McIlroy further elaborated on his critique of the PGA Tour, highlighting its shortcomings. He questioned the practice of demanding millions of dollars for event sponsorship while failing to ensure player participation. He also expressed surprise at the PGA Tour's ability to thrive despite these issues, a sentiment that has resonated with many in the golf community.
McIlroy is currently No.2 in the official world golf rankings, trailing only Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler recently secured his second Masters victory. During the event, McIlroy tied for 25th place, with an overall score of +4 across the four days.
The four-time Major winner recorded ten birdies, 51 pars, 12 bogeys, and a double bogey throughout the tournament. Despite not achieving a top finish, McIlroy's performance notably included a 1-under 71 on the third day.
