Wayne Rooney has recounted an extraordinary round of golf he once enjoyed with former US President Donald Trump, where he found himself under the watchful eyes of snipers.

The Manchester United and England football legend was in Washington DC at the time, playing for DC United, when he had the surreal experience of being shadowed by a heavy security detail as he played 18 holes with Trump.

The bizarre scenario unfolded with former New York Mayor Rudi Guiliani tagging along and a flotilla of security buggies trailing them.

Rooney, who scored 23 goals during his stint in the States, shared the wild tale on Gary Neville's The Overlap, powered by Sky Bet.

He said when asked who the most famous person he's played golf with: "Donald Trump. The maddest thing about it was we had [Rudi] Guiliani in the buggy behind us, then there were about 50-100 golf buggies that were all security.

He continued, to the astonishment of Neville: "There was a boat in the lake with snipers, there were snipers in the bushes, and I was like 'what's going on here?!'"

This incredible encounter on the greens came about through a connection with Trump's son and even led to a memorable visit to the Oval Office for Rooney.

Rooney shared: "I went in, he asked me to give his son football lessons. He said 'do you want to see my dad?'

"He took me into the Oval Office. From there his PA just texted, 'do you want to play golf?'"

In another interesting answer in his insightful chat with Neville, Rooney revealed that he used to listen to Susan Boyle before matches for Manchester United, Everton or England.

He said: "I'd normally get on the massage bed, and I'd actually put Susan Boyle on. It just helped me settle down – only for that little bit of time I was on the massage bed."
