Punters on the Guineas warpath

Aidan O'Brien has a great record as a trainer[GETTY]

WAR COMMAND, now 10-1 from 12-1, was all the rage yesterday with Coral for Saturday’s Qipco 2,000 Guineas.

David Stevens, of Coral, said: “War Command was 5-1 favourite for the Guineas in our opening show after his Coventry Stakes win last summer, but lost that position with defeat in the Phoenix Stakes.

“Now punters clearly believe 12-1 was too big about a Dewhurst winner, and with Ryan Moore riding, his odds could shorten further.”

Aidan O’Brien, trainer of War Command and successful in the Newmarket Classic six times, will also be represented by Australia, the 3-1 second favourite.

Australia, who has been talked up by his trainer as something special, will be ridden by O’Brien’s son Joseph.

Richard Hughes will partner Richard Hannon’s principal hope Toormore and Kieren Fallon has been confirmed for Night Of Thunder. FrankieDettori is expected to take the ride on Hannon’s Shifting Power.

The lack of rain at Newmarket is a concern for the supporters of the even money favourite Kingman.

If the ground is firm he will not be running.

Michael Prosser, the clerk of the course, reports the ground to be good to firm but watering is taking place.

At Punchestown yesterday, Faugheen showed that he is a worthy contender for next season’s Champion Hurdle after thumping his opponents in the Herald Champion Novice Hurdle.

After dismounting from the winner of his seven races, Ruby Walsh said: “The lad who rides him every day said he’d blow you away and he did.”

Faugheen now heads the betting at 5-1, with The New One, for the hurdling crown.
