Alberto Contador ban lifted
ALBERTO CONTADOR expressed his relief after having a drugs ban quashed by the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation.
Three-time Tour de France winner Contador, 28, tested positive for a banned substance, Clenbuterol, during last year’s Tour but attributed the result to contaminated meat and maintained his innocence throughout.
The RFEC’s disciplinary committee last month proposed a one-year ban but yesterday Contador’s spokesman confirmed he is free to begin the Volta ao Algarve today.
Contador said: “I’m relieved and happy. These have been very stressful months but I have told the truth throughout.”
The International Cycling Union, the world governing body, said they will consider the RFEC verdict before deciding on a course of action.
