Scotland rugby coach Gregor Townsend’s reaction to dramatic Six Nations draw with England
SCOTLAND were seconds away from a historic win over England in the Six Nations today - and Gregor Townsend’s face said it all.
Scotland were leading 38-31 heading into the dying stages of the game after sparking a remarkable comeback.
The Scots at one point were 31-0 down against England as their hosts ran riot at Twickenham.
But a stunning second-half performance looked to have won Scotland the game when Sam Johnson crossed over for a try with just minutes remaining.
It appeared as though Scotland would hold on for a famous win until three minutes past the 80, when George Ford crossed over and converted for a late leveller.
And Scotland coach Townsend looked devastated in the stands.
As these images from the ITV coverage of the game show, Townsend grimaced and shook his head as England scored the vital points.
After the match Scotland fly-half Finn Russell said: "I'm gutted.
“At half-time everyone would have written Scotland off.
“For us to come out and have a second half like that shows the character the boys have.
“I’m just so disappointed we didn't manage to finish it off at the end.
"The first half we got caught off guard then in the second half we had nothing to lose and we played our rugby. We played good Scottish rugby the second half.
"There were a lot of injuries but the boys who have filled in have been outstanding.
“The whole campaign has been frustrating. We've had close games and not played at our best sometimes.
“But It's a good way to finish with the Calcutta Cup back in Scotland."
