Wimbledon 2010: John Isner runs out of steam
MARATHON man John Isner finally ran out of road yesterday – his exhausting exploits in winning the longest set and match in history inevitably taking their toll.
Fatigue, a stiff neck, blistered toes and the freshness of his opponent conspired against American Isner.
After his 11-hour, 183-game epic with Nicolas Mahut, he lasted only 74 minutes against Thiemo De Bakker, who triumphed 6-0, 6-3, 6-2. And that was the shortest completed match of the men’s event so far.
An utterly spent Isner said: “I didn’t have much in the way of my legs. I was just low on fuel. I didn’t really have a chance.”
