Daniel Smethurst a future British Wimbledon hope
DANIEL SMETHURST, one of the most improved players of the year, went the same way as the other four British men given a wild-card entry into Wimbledon - the exit gate.
But there was no disgrace for the Mancunian, who made ninth seed John Isner battle all the way for his 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 first-round win.
This was not only Smethurst's first match at Wimbledon but his debut in any Tour event. All his experience before has come at the second level of tennis on the Futures circuit.
Smethurst, 23, finished last year ranked 396 but he came into Wimbledon 160 places higher having reached eight futures finals in the first six months of 2014.
