Popular Greek island slammed as tourists describe it as a ‘fake Disneyland’
Tourists have described Mykonos and Santorini as "expensive" and claim they've been ruined by Instagram influencers.
Santorini and Mykonos are pretty much postcard-perfect images of what many people see when they picture a Greek island.
With whitewashed houses, blue-roofed churches and gorgeous beaches, the islands draw millions of tourists every year.
However, for some visitors, the islands are just way too crowded to enjoy. A tourist wrote on Reddit: “My experience in Mykonos wasn’t great. Everything is super expensive including the food.
“Please do research on visiting another island instead. Mykonos is the biggest tourist trap of all. Santorini comes next but it’s better.”
The tourist said that their trip had put them off the Greek islands altogether and advised visitors to include just one island in their itinerary.
Another tourist opined: “The other islands in the Cyclades are amazing. Mykonos and Santorini are like Disneyland and Las Vegas.
“Fake. Expensive. They’ve been ruined by tourist prices for everything and Instagram influencers. Smaller islands each have their own vibe.”
While Mykonos and Santorini are often some of the cheapest Greek islands to get to from the UK, they’re very expensive once there.

One user said: “I would agree completely on Mykonos. Am never going back. Santorini was expensive for drinks but you could still get affordable food.”
However, not everyone agreed about Mykonos. One tourist said: “I enjoyed Mykonos. Super expensive and touristy but the old town is beautiful.
“Also there are a lot of cool art galleries and that sort of thing. I think people love to hate on Mykonos but it’s popular for a reason and I’m glad I visited.”
Visiting outside of peak season could be a good idea for tourists who want to avoid the summer crowds.
One visitor said: “I went to Mykonos in late September and had a great experience. Nearly everyone I met was delightful and friendly, locals and tourists alike.
“The beaches were lovely and very nice for swimming. It was easy to travel to and around with young children.”
