According to a new study, it's also one of the top destinations in Europe for those seeking a budget city break.

A study conducted by Quotezone.co.uk analysed data from the 12 most visited capital cities across Europe including Paris, Berlin, Madrid and Rome, and listed Zagreb among its most budget-friendly hotspots.

The cities were ranked based on several factors which budget holidaymakers should look out for, including tourist tax, hotel costs, the price of a meal and beer, public transport ticket costs, and the distance from the airport.

Zagreb in particular ranked highly for its affordable beers and cheap transport links, perfect for getting around. The study found that tourists typically pay just €1 per day in tourist tax, which equates to roughly 86p.

It's a considerable saving when compared to other European capitals such as Rome, where tourist tax is approximately £6.45 per day.

There are also savings to be had when it comes to dining out and drinking in the city. The study found that the average price of a meal out is just €12.00 - which is roughly £10.32.

If you fancy a beer to go along with your meal, you'll spend just £2.58 on average. Compared with beer in the UK’s capital city of London, where the average price of a pint in London is £5.90, Zagreb's beer is noticeably more affordable.

The study found that public transport costs, on average, just €0.53 per ticket - equating to a spend of just 46p. And given the city's connectivity to the airport, you can get to and from your flight without having to break the bank.

Tripadvisor describes the city as a "unique blend" of historic buildings and modern amenities. The experts said: "These days, Zagreb is the heart of contemporary Croatia’s culture, art, sports, and academics, but its history is not forgotten.

"The unique blend of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, open-air markets, and ancient cathedrals, make Zagreb the perfect city to explore."

Prices for a stay in the city vary depending on what you are looking for, but according to Booking.com ratings, one of Zagreb's "best cheap stays" is the Bed & Breakfast Donji Grad, where a stay for upcoming dates is just £89 a night. Guests have ranked the bed and breakfast as "superb".
