This beautiful European city is full of history and charm, making it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway, though it is often overlooked for a nearby city.

Koper in Slovenia is a stunning city on the country's Adriatic coast, full of medieval old town centres and a square with Venetian-style landmarks.

Visiting the Praetorian Palace and Gothic-style loggia are perfect activities for those looking to take in the rich history of the city, and the circa-12th-century Cathedral of the Assumption features a tall campanile with sweeping bay views.

Despite this, Koper is often overlooked for the nearby city of Piran, but this just means it won't be as overrun with tourists and you'll be able to enjoy a more leisurely city break.

As well as historical buildings, the city offers a host of delicious food and drink, which you can find at the open-air farmers and flea markets in Carpaccio Square.

Walking through the old town will also lead you to shops on Shoemaker Street and to a selection of bars and restaurants by the harbour.

It's also well connected to nearby towns and attractions, such as the Postojna Caves, a wonderful natural feature carved by the Pivka River, and only 45 minutes away.

For thrill seekers, there are also white water rafting expeditions on the Soca River, famous for its bright blue and green waters, and roughly two hours from the city.

There are also many hop-on and hop-off tours, allowing travellers to enjoy the food and historical sites of the city and surrounding areas at their own pace.

To get there, hop on a flight from Gatwick Airport to Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, and then take public transport or hire a car for the rest of the journey. Or for a more scenic route, take the Eurostar from London to Paris, and then on to Koper.

While you're there, be sure to try veal and buckwheat dumplings, the country's national dish, as well as potica, its traditional festive pastry.
