Africa is a destination becoming increasingly popular with travellers, particularly for those who are looking to experience stunning scenery and fascinating wildlife.

There are countless opportunities to go on safari and see some of the greatest wonders of nature. South Africa's Kruger Park is perhaps the most famous and well known of the continent's nature reserves.

But there is yet another reserve perhaps not so well known, but just as beautiful and full of exotic wildlife, which also has much less visitors. The Okavango Delta is a vast and varied ecosystem created as the Okavango River flows into the Kalahari desert in Botswana.

Rich in wildlife, this World Heritage Site is a sanctuary to some of the world's most endangered animals and birds. Each year the Okavango River discharges approximately 11 cubic kilometres of water into the Okavango Delta.

Most of this is lost to transpiration by plants (60 percent) and by evaporation (36 percent). Only two percent percolates into the aquifer system, with the remainder finally flowing into Lake Ngami.

Generally flat and with a height variation of less than two meters across its area, dry land in the Okavango Delta is predominantly comprised of numerous small islands, formed when vegetation takes root on termite mounds.

An oasis in an otherwise dry environment the Okavango Delta is known for its superb wildlife, with large populations of mammals and excellent birding particularly in the breeding season.

The wildlife includes almost all species from bush elephants to leopards to rhinos and zebras.

The visitor can also see hippopotamuses, giraffes and wildebeest, as well as the endangered African wild dog.
