World's most popular destination for British expats is known for its natural beauty

A new study has unveiled the countries that Britons are most desperate to move to and the top country is a nature-lover's paradise.

Ever thought about leaving the UK for work, a better quality of life or perhaps even to find love? A new study has revealed the countries that Britons are most keen on moving to. 

From Japan to Spain, there are a few destinations that appeal to Brits according to a new study from the team at 1st Move International. 

But while Spain is often one of the UK's most popular destinations for British expats, it didn't come out on top of this list. 

Neil Raymond, the owner of international insurance brokerage Pacific Prime, shares, “We’ve been monitoring the most popular countries for expats for years and years. While some locations are obvious, you may be surprised to learn of some of the rising stars. Expats seem to value affordability, convenience, and overall quality of life standards.”

The team looked for the countries most searched for on Google with 'move to', 'houses in' and 'relocate to'. Are any of these countries on your dream wishlist? Let us know in the comments.

9. Switzerland

Switzerland was one of the most dreamed-of expat destinations. The country regularly tops lists on quality of life so it's no surprise to see it included in this ranking. However, expats should be aware that Switzerland is one of Europe's most expensive countries. 

Generally, expats will need a high salary to afford housing and essentials in Switzerland.

8. France 

'La vie en rose' was attractive to plenty of Britons, with France featuring high on the desirable list for expats. Whether you're dreaming of living in fashionable Paris or would prefer the sweet life in Provence, France has plenty to offer. 

Expats will find the best housing bargains if they look in smaller villages or further inland.

7. Germany 

Set to host EURO 2024, Germany is catching plenty of attention at the moment and some people are thinking long-term. Germany is considered one of the world's safest countries and housing is affordable in some of the country's smaller cities. 

Expats will generally need to get to grips with some German before they consider moving there.

6. Japan 

Japan is one of the world's top tourist destinations and it's also top of the list for British expats. The country's bustling cities and outstanding natural beauty are extremely attractive to many expats. 

It can be tricky to secure a long-term expat visa for Japan so Britons should check the process before applying.

5. Portugal 

Looking for somewhere sunny? Portugal might just fit the bill. The gorgeous country has some of Europe's most spectacular beaches in the Algarve region while Lisbon is one of the continent's prettiest capitals. According to a recent Post Office Travel Money report, Portugal is also one of Western Europe's cheapest destinations.
