World's best countries to be over 60 named - number one is incredibly beautiful and safe

A gorgeous European country has been named the best place to grow old - and it's not that far from the UK.

Growing older can be a worry for many people, especially if you're stressed about your pension, retirement years or healthcare. 

But in some countries around the world, growing older isn't as much of a worry. 

The World Happiness Report for 2024 looked at the happiness levels of people aged 60 and over to find the best country to grow old

While Lithuania was named as the best place in the world to be a young person, the results for older people were pretty different.

10. USA 

The USA is officially the 10th best country to be an older person with high levels of happiness among that demographic. According to statistics from the Census Bureau, Maine and Florida are the states with the highest number of people over 65, making them popular choices for older people.

9. Australia

Australia was one of the best places in the world to be an elderly person with high ratings of happiness in that demographic. The country has a good healthcare system and its warm weather helps to boost happiness levels for many.

8. Canada

Canada was the highest-scoring North American country with high rates of happiness recorded by residents over the age of 60. 

The country is known for its natural beauty and safe society.

7. Netherlands

One of the many European countries to make the top 10, the Netherlands was one of the world's best places to be an older person. 

According to Expatica, the Dutch pension system is one of the world's best which could explain why so many residents over the age of 60 describe themselves as happy.

6. New Zealand

New Zealand just missed out on a spot in the top five best places to be a person over the age of 60. 

An estimated 60,000 UK retirees are living in New Zealand currently and many people are drawn by the country's high standard of living and friendly residents.
