A popular travel expert has taken to YouTube to share how tourists can get a substantial discount on a hotel room in just a few minutes.

Mitch Glass runs the YouTube channel Project Unthethered, uploading videos in which he shares advice that can help tourists to make the most of their time away and save money on common holiday expenses.

In a recent video, Mitch shares how a simple extension that can be added to most internet browsers has helped him to get better prices for hotel rooms.

He advised: "We're going to go to this page and fire up an extension called 'Rate Punk'. When you turn on this extension, you just have to click over here on the right-hand side and we're going to open it up for these four hotels and just let it load for a second.

"So, if we scroll down to the prices, we can see that the cheapest price for this five-night stay at this place is $1,949 (£1,515) on Booking.com. But, I'm currently in Colombia and Rate Punk is saying that if I change my IP address so it looks like I'm in the US, I can instantly save $283 (£220)."

In the video, Mitch uses an extension for Google Chrome that searched for prices for the same hotel room in different countries to find the best deal.

The YouTuber found that, by switching to an American internet service, he was able to save more than £200 when booking the room, when compared to what he was quoted in Colombia.

Tourists are able to see how much hotel rooms would cost in different countries by using a virtual private network (VPN) which changes the device's IP address to that from a different country.

Later in the video, Mitch noted that many VPN services allow users to choose the country in particular that tourists would like to search in, showing viewers that the trick can get tourists rooms for a better price.

He added: "I have the app open here and can choose from all these different locations that I could change my IP address to, or I can just search at the top for different locations.

"So I'm going to switch to Detroit and wait for it to load. The price before was $1,949 (£1,515), and now I'm just going to hit refresh and instantly it goes down to $1,754 (£1,365)."
