There’s nothing quite like exploring a new European city on foot. When it comes to Switzerland, several of the country’s top destinations are extremely walkable.

But which is the easiest destination to explore without a car?

According to a recent study on walkability, Lausanne is one of the world’s most walkable cities and more than 50 percent of its residents walk or cycle to walk.

The French-speaking city sits on the shores of Lake Geneva and has a global feel as it’s home to the International Olympic Committee headquarters.

Lausanne’s medieval buildings and Gothic cathedral give the city a fairytale-like appearance that’s entranced tourists for decades.

Start your day at the city’s Olympic Museum, Lausanne’s best-rated tourist attraction on Tripadvisor. The Museum tracks the event’s sporting history with plenty of interactive exhibits.

From the museum, it’s a five-minute walk to the Parc Olympique, one of the city’s best free attractions. Enjoy the park’s Olympic-themed statues with incredible views of Lake Geneva.

Enjoy an al fresco snack in the park or take a 15-minute walk to Lausanne’s pretty Port d’Ouchy.

Lausanne’s gorgeous lakeside resort, Port d’Ouchy is ideal for a scenic walk or visit the city’s rose garden.

From Port d’Ouchy, it’s around half an hour’s walk to the city centre where you’ll find Lausanne Cathedral and the beautiful Place de la Palud square.

Wander the streets of historic Lausanne and check out some of the city’s sweet independent boutiques.

After your walk, try some typical Lausanne dishes. Local sausage and cheese are some of the best delicacies to sample.

Of course, you can also take a dip in Lake Geneva by visiting one of the city’s lakeside beaches.

Plage de Vidy is one of the most easily accessible beaches from the centre of the city or head further out to Plage de Préverenges.
