Europe's least liveable city is a popular tourist destination but residents aren't happy

A beautiful coastal city is one of Europe's leading holiday destinations but it's also the continent's worst place to live according to one study.

Ever dreamed of leaving the UK and moving abroad as a British expat? There might be some European cities you'll want to avoid. 

A huge study by the European Commission asked residents from all over the continent to rate their city based on important factors such as housing, green space and healthcare. 

While almost nine out of 10 people in Europe were satisfied with their lives, that wasn't the case everywhere. A popular tourist destination had Europe's least happy residents.

10. Podgorica, Montenegro

Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, had Europe's 10th least satisfied residents. While Montenegro's pretty coastline has seen plenty of tourists in recent years, the country's capital doesn't get nearly as many visitors. Fewer than half of Podgorica's residents thought the city was a good place for LGBTQ people to live while 22 percent of people reported feelings of loneliness.

9. Miskolc, Hungary

Miskolc is an industrial city in northeastern Hungary and the country's fourth largest metropolis. Fewer than half of Miskolc's residents reported feeling safe walking alone at night while under a quarter of people thought it was easy to find a good job there. Residents were also unimpressed by the city's healthcare offering.

8. Skopje, North Macedonia

Skopje, the capital city of North Macedonia, had some of Europe's least satisfied residents. Only 13 percent of people felt that their quality of life had improved in the last five years. 7. Rome, Italy

Despite being one of Europe's leading holiday destinations, Rome has some of the continent's least satisfied residents. Only three percent of people felt their quality of life had improved in the last five years in the Italian capital. Fewer than half of residents felt that the city was a good place for older people to live.

6. Belgrade, Serbia

Serbia's capital had some of Europe's least satisfied residents. Only 38 percent of people felt that their fellow residents could be trusted. Around 60 percent of people were satisfied with their job while fewer than half of the city's residents were satisfied with public transport.
