Nestled in the province of Brescia, within the enchanting region of Lombardy, Monte Isola is celebrated as one of the most beautiful towns and communes in Italy.

This idyllic island town, recognised as part of I Borghi più belli d'Italia — a prestigious private association of over 350 villages representing Italy's beauty and charm — offers visitors a truly unique experience.

Monte Isola can be found on the largest inhabited island on any European lake, serenely situated in the heart of Lake Iseo. The island is characterised by its vibrant boats, rustic stone villages, and narrow, winding streets that are just waiting to be explored.

With cars prohibited (except for the local priests and doctors) the best ways to navigate the island are on foot, by scooter, or by bicycle. This allows many to immerse themselves fully in the tranquil ambience and witness the astounding views.

Upon arrival, a quick visit to one of the island’s bike rental shops will equip you with the perfect set of wheels for your adventure.

Cycling around the island, you’ll be able to ride through traditional fishing villages, pedal through groves of olive trees, and enjoy breathtaking views of the lake and its surrounding mountains, as well as the nearby San Paolo and Loreto islands.

There is also a shuttle bus service which operates on Saturdays, Sundays, and during holidays from 10.00am to 6.30pm.

Departing from Peschiera Maraglio Pier 1, the shuttle takes you to the quaint village of Cure. From here, a short trail leads to one of Monte Isola’s most revered landmarks — the Santuario Madonna della Ceriola.

Situated at the highest point of Monte Isola, this 15th-century sanctuary offers unparalleled panoramic views of Lake Iseo and the Franciacorta wine region in Lombardy.

Within its walls, visitors can admire a 12th-century wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child in her arms, a shrine which is surrounded by stunning frescoes, paintings, and ex-votos — tokens of gratitude from those who have received blessings.

Another historical gem is the Martinengo Fortress, a 14th-century fortress built by the Oldofredi family. Positioned on a rocky hill that overlooks the southern basin of the lake, this beloved attraction is a testament to the island’s rich history and offers a fascinating glimpse into its medieval past.

Monte Isola is also famed for its culinary traditions, boasting local delicacies such as Monte Isola salami, extra-virgin olive oil, and sun-dried sardines.

The island is laced with a variety of enticing restaurants, trattorias, and inns where visitors can savour traditional dishes and enjoy tasting menus that celebrate regional flavours.

There are numerous frequent ferry services from towns along Lake Iseo’s coastline. Monte Isola is most easily reached from the Sulzano harbour, with ferries to Peschiera Maraglio departing every 15 minutes.

Whether you’re exploring by bike, divulging in local eateries, or embracing the serene atmosphere, Monte Isola promises an unforgettable Italian escape.
