Looking to explore the Albanian riviera? Or perhaps you’re just in need of some “quietude”? Either way, this region in Albania is becoming a more and more popular holiday destination for the best reasons.

Situated on the Albanian Riviera lies one of the smallest coastal towns — Himarë.

Around four hours south of Tirana and 90 minutes north of Saranda, this relatively small town is often chosen by globetrotters who are seeking a place to relax and unwind by the Mediterranean sea.

Himarë, with its captivating panoramic views and Mediterranean climate, is rightfully considered one of the most esteemed coastal destinations in Albania. It is also one of few European towns that is free from the large flocks of tourists in certain parts of the region.

Surrounded by canyons, the old town of Himarë is built on a hill located about 1 km away from the Ionian shore.

The old town and its commanding hilltop castle stand as testament to the rich historical legacy of Albania, dating back to Illyrian times. It can be reached by wandering through the town’s narrow and winding streets, which are lined with traditional stone walls and houses.

The Himarë Castle is one of the cherished ancient architectural marvels in the region. Standing on the cliff of Barbaka, which is 240 metres high, the castle can be dated back to the 8th century BC and consists of a network of small cobbled streets between some inhabited and (partially) ruined, uninhabited houses.

Among the ruins of the castle are also some interesting and captivating churches, including the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus and the Church of St. Mary Kasopitra.

It is considered as one of the most beautiful castles of the south because it offers spectacular views in all directions.

Another captivating natural wonder that beckons adventurers seeking a blend of history, mystery, and coastal beauty is Pirates Cave that sits along the Albanian riviera and lies within the municipality of Himarë.

Earning its intriguing name from local legends which have suggested that it once served as a hideout location for pirates during the Ottoman Empire, its ethereal atmosphere and history which lies within its rocky walls, is something you need to experience for yourself. Guided tours have a duration of two to three hours and prices start between €20 to €30.

Alongside these attractions, there are also numerous beautiful beaches in Himarë. Not only do the Albanian Riviera beaches rival that of Greece and Croatia, but they are also extremely affordable to visit.

Spile beach, also known as Himarë beach, is the main beach located in the heart of town. Its crystal clear waters and golden sandy beach is a popular choice for tourists and is particularly the most accessible if you are staying in the city.

Since Himarë is located in a bay, the water is calm and pretty shallow here. It’s also a great place for kayakers who can explore the nearby beaches and rocky shorelines.

This signature activity is one that is highly recommended by visitors and remarked as “fun and truly unforgettable”. You can rent a kayak at the beach for around £8 an hour.

Gjipe, Llamani, and Livadhi are also among the most highly-rated and “must-visit” beaches in Himarë.
