A lesser-known Spanish island has been dubbed a "paradise where time has stopped" by enthusiastic reviewers who have stumbled upon the rarely discovered area.

Tamaduste, a small Canary Island is one of the lesser known parts of the Canaries but has plenty of things to do and see. The island is made up of volcanic rock and much like Tenerife it has mostly black sand beaches.

The town is close to the airport on the Valverde coast. Historically it was an old sailor settlement and even today the town has a small community feel.

While you’re there, a must-do activity is to try the natural swimming pools. These are popular on the island and are one of the main attractions. They are a safe place to enjoy the views from and to rest and relax.

If you’re looking for adventure, there are also lots of places to go diving or snorkelling, including Playa La Caleta. It is also home to a variety of biodiversity meaning you’ll be in for a unique and exciting experience under the water.

The easiest way to get to Tamaduste is by flying to Tenerife and then taking a ferry over to the island. Alternatively, you can fly to Tenerife and then take another short flight from there to Valverde El Hierro airport.

You can get here by walking or taking a local bus which run frequently. You’ll also be able to see the countryside of the island on your way as you’ll pass through fields.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “This is a paradise where time has stopped, there are breathtaking views with different peculiarities, from the impetuous sea of the north west to the calm and warm waters of the south.”

For a bite to eat, Pizzeria Harina y Tomate, is a great restaurant to stop off at. One diner said: “This place had been recommended by a friend who frequently stays in Tamaduste and we were lucky that it was right down the street from our rental.

"Wow! The number of pizzas on the menu are amazing, as well as the delicious pizzas themselves.”
