A quaint UK town is a stone's throw from some of the country's most stunning coasts, with far fewer tourists than nearby more popular parts of Cornwall.

Redruth, a market town near St Ives and Truro in Cornwall, has been hailed by visitors as a hidden gem which has kept its peaceful atmosphere despite its obvious charms and a £6million project to regenerate the area.

It's also perfect for sunseekers with lovely beaches only a few miles away, with top pics including Greenbank Cove, Portreath and Bassetts Cove.

More intrepid explorers can also use the town as a base for exploring north Cornwall and the dramatic beauty of around Land’s End.

If you're happy go a bit further out, it's a 11.7 mile drive to Hayle, via the cliffs of Hell’s Mouth just past St Ives Bay and Godrevy lighthouse which tower over the waves.

Portreath Beach is a local gem which Visit Cornwall says is "hugely popular amongst swimmers and surfers alike".

Though the town isn't exactly a seaside resort, its cute little shops and pastel-coloured buildings create a cosy coastal vibe perfect for a weekend away.

A number of rooms are available on Airbnb, or if you're looking for something a bit more upmarket, The Penventon Park Hotel features striking interiors, including a copper staircase and Ralph Lauren fabrics.

There's even an indoor pool and spa treatments if you need to recharge your batteries. Double rooms at the family owned hotel start at £149 including breakfast, the i newspaper reports.

Tyacks Hotel in nearby Camborne is said to be another good option, though the experience is more stripped back as its a pub with rooms.

Redruth prides itself on its Cornish heritage and if you're looking for some authentic fare, look no further than Berryman’s on Fore Street) which is known for its pasties.

The Penventon Park Hotel also offers Cornish-inspired cuisine like fresh local fish and chips and seafood linguini and locally produced gins and wine.

A plaque in the town proudly declares that “The Industrial Revolution was born here,” and fascinating relics of the town's mining history are dotted around the area.

Other highlights include the nearby Home Ground Coffee where you can pick up a cake and an espresso, and Ginger’s Diner a1950s-style eatery run which proudly claims to be the “only drag café outside London”, the outlet reports.

There are direct trains to Redruth via the London Paddington to Penzance, with train services from the North and the Midlands also stopping in the town.
