If you like your movies dripping with sentiment (and good soundtracks), Cameron Crowe is your man. He will make you laugh, sure. But he will also have you crying your eyes out. In honor of his new movie Aloha, we take a look back at 10 times Cameron Crowe brought the tears.

The Boombox Scene – Say Anything... (1989)

Yeah there are some stalker vibes going on, but who cares? In Cameron Crowe’s hands it becomes a heartfelt and iconic moment of romantic longing. (The great song doesn’t hurt, either.)

Watching the Sunrise – Elizabethtown (2005)

Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst each drive twenty minutes in the pre-dawn to watch the sunrise together. Pretty typical Cameron Crowe romanticism, which means it totally works.

20 Seconds of Courage – We Bought a Zoo (2011)

While this may or may not be good advice, it certainly sounds nice, especially in the context of this film. Witnessing a grieving father giving the advice to his troubled son brings all sorts of emotions to the table.

The Final Scene – Singles (1992)

All Bridget Fonda wants is a guy who says “bless you” when she sneezes. It takes a whole film for Matt Dillon’s character to mature enough to reach that low bar, but eventually he does. And the two can finally live happily ever after.

You Had Me at Hello – Jerry Maguire (1996)

Cameron Crowe knows how to write a romantic speech, and Tom Cruise definitely knows how to deliver it. He may have had at her at hello, but he gets to keep her because of everything else he says.

The Big Ending – Vanilla Sky (2001)

Vanilla Sky isn’t the most sentimental Cameron Crowe movie. Actually, it’s his least sentimental movie to this point. But that doesn’t stop him from going big for the film’s incredibly touching emotional finish.

Tiny Dancer – Almost Famous (2000)

Music is always important in Cameron Crowe films, and this might be his best scene. Watching a bruised family have a cathartic sing-along to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” packs a huge emotional wallop.

Rod Wins! – Jerry Maguire (1996)

Everyone loves a win. And after all the raw desperation on display in Jerry Maguire, this win feels huge, easily big enough to yank a couple tears from even the most hardened film watcher.

Letting Go – We Bought a Zoo (2011)

Anyone who has lost a person close to them should have a hard time keeping it together as Matt Damon finally admits why he bought that darn zoo.

Uncool Phone Call - Almost Famous (2000)

Sort of sad, while also sort of uplifting, this phone call between two generations of uncool guys who make a living looking at a world they’ll never be a part of touches all the right subtle tear buttons. Bonus points for the great Philip Seymour Hoffman performance.
