Last month when Warner Bros. bumped Seventh Son from a mid-October release to early/mid-January 2014, it certainly raised a few eyebrows. Granted the film wasn't expected to break any box office records, but with a cast that includes Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore and Chronicles of Narnia star Ben Barnes, Seventh Son seemed poised to be a late-2013 hit.
The movie was added to Warner Bros.' slate of films the studio will be promoting at Comic-Con next Saturday and today, we get a look at the first trailer of the adaptation of Joseph Delaney's book. Take a look.
Seventh Son certainly looks like it's on par with early 2013 releases like Hansel and Gretel and Jack the Giant Slayer. Neither film did particularly well, but here are three reasons why Seventh Son might have a chance.
1. Most people didn't think twice about Hansel and Gretel and the majority of critics brushed it aside as another subpar January movie. The film ended up being a success though thanks to word of mouth, so much so that a sequel is currently in the works. With Hollywood's pandemic addiction to sequelize everything, even a Hansel and Gretel-sized $56 million domestic take could be considered a success as long as the foreign box office brings in double that amount.
2. Speaking of foreign box office, this movie features a trio of talented, young rising stars. Game of Thrones' Kit Harrington and A Royal Affair's Alicia Vikander along with the aforementioned Barnes of Narnia fame star in the film. Thrones, Affair and Narnia all have their niche audiences and while, in the bigger picture it doesn't necessarily mean they'll determine the success of the movie, their fandom certainly helps. Vikander and Barnes particularly help out with the European markets.
3. Jeff Bridges. It's been several years since Bridges starred in a feature film. Not counting last year's animated biopic Pablo, you'd have to go back to 2010 when he starred in two December hits: True Grit and TRON: Legacy. His filmography is so extensive and accomplished that you can't help but wonder how he'll do in this CGI-heavy fantasy flick. Of course, we'll get a look at Bridges next week in R.I.P.D., which could prove to be a sleeper hit. And then there's always The Big Lebowski fans who abide by the Dude at all times.
