Audiences had plenty to be thankful for over the weekend, as Thanksgiving crowds powered two blockbusters to significant victories on the box office charts.

When all was said and done, it was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire that topped the top 10, earning an estimated $74.5 million in its second weekend. That pushed the overall cume on Catching Fire near the $300-million mark for domestic receipts. Right now, the second Hunger Games film rests at $296.5 million. By comparison, the original Hunger Games reached the $248 million mark in its second weekend back in March 2012. So the sequel is ahead of that pace.

Then again, the first Hunger Games didn’t have contend with a competitive (and fantastic) animated effort from Walt Disney.

Frozen, based on the classic short story The Snow Queen, iced the box office competition with a healthy $66.7 million. The musical comedy actually tested the waters with a soft opening the week before, so Frozen has banked $93.3 million to date. But it’s building to a reported $150 million budget… expensive for an animated feature.

Frozen is performing up to a high standard set by recent Walt Disney Animation Studios features, from Wreck-It Ralph to Tangled. Of those recent films, Tangled has earned the most overall, with $200 million. Can Frozen top that number in time?

We shall see.
