Remember when I wrote in the Oblivion trailer story that sci-fi narratives set on a post-apocalyptic Earth are less-than-original? This kind of solidifies my point. As soon as the trailer for the Tom Cruise thriller hits the Web, Sony follows up with their own post-apocalyptic trailer that happens to star the high-powered duo of Will and Jaden Smith.

After Earth casts the father-and-son team as astronauts stranded on a barren Earth who must survive while fending off an array of hostile, natural forces that have eliminated most of the population from our planet. It looks like a cross between Avatar and John Carter. Check out the first After Earth trailer:

We’re marginally concerned because the Smiths are teaming with M. Night Shyamalan for After Earth, and the director hasn’t had a clear-cut hit in several years. I will say that I like the father-son mentor tone of this trailer, and the effects look like they could impress.

Sony wants to have After Earth in theaters on June 7, 2013. Here’s the full synopsis. What do you think of the first clip?

“A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.”
