A learning-disabled eighth-grader, Maxwell Kane (Elden Hansen) meets Kevin Dillon (Kieran Culkin), who's a bright, physically deformed youngster. Maxwell gets Kevin to tutor him in reading, and the two become friends, sharing an abiding optimism in spite of their difficulties.
