Project of the month: SESAR investigates how to automate complex clearances in support of free-route airspace operations
SESAR members NATS and Indra recently completed research into a capability which facilitates the generation of route changes and clearances, reducing the chances of mistyped instructions and paving the way for more complex free route operations in Europe.
"Europe for Aviation” teaming up to tackle sustainability, capacity and innovation at the 2020 World ATM Congress
The “Europe for Aviation” team, made up of eight European aviation organisations working to implement the Single European Sky (SES), will gather at this year’s World ATM Congress, from 10 to 12 March in Madrid, Spain. Over the course of the 3-day Congress, these organisations will showcase how through collaboration they can go much further tackling the most pressing challenges facing aviation, such as sustainability, capacity and innovation.
 
SESAR 2020 delivers first wave of results
In 2019, the first wave of SESAR 2020 industrial research programme came to a close, delivering a number of solutions (as part of Release 9) to the necessary level of maturity to make them available for pre-industrialisation The closure of the first wave of activities has resulted in a prioritisation of the remaining candidate solutions, focusing on those that will bring the expected benefits and that will reach V3 maturity by the end of the SESAR 2020 programme.
 
SESAR KTN, Engage: get involved in 2020
At the SESAR Innovation Days, Engage announced a range of dates and opportunities for getting involved in its programme in 2020. Key ‘save the dates’ to note are the cybersecurity workshop on 17 June 2020 (Vienna), and the 2020 summer school from 06 July (Luxembourg). The second Call for proposals supported by catalyst funding opened on 06 January 2020. These opportunities are open to all. Plan to digitalise Europe’s aviation infrastructure adopted
The Administrative Board of the SESAR Joint Undertaking formally approved the 2020 edition of the European ATM Master Plan, signalling strong consensus across Europe’s aviation sector to move ahead swiftly with the digital transformation of Europe’s aviation infrastructure, making air transport smarter, more sustainable and accessible to all.
 
SESAR innovation recognised in 2019 ATM Magazine Awards
SESAR projects and partners were among the winners of the ATM Awards 2019, each judged to be outstanding performers spearheading innovation and leading the industry to ever greater performance. The awards attracted entries from across the global air transport industry, highlighting major innovation and projects that stand to enhance airspace capacity, safety and environmental sustainability.
 
Young talent celebrated at 2019 SESAR Innovation Days
Airspace design, the integration of drones, machine learning and automation were just some of the research themes of this year’s SESAR Innovation Days (SIDS), which took place between 2-5 December in Athens. Bringing together over 400 participants, the event celebrated in particular young talent in aviation with the awarding of the Young Scientist Award and the Digital Sky Challenge.
 
SESAR digital academy launched
2019 saw the launch of the SESAR Digital Academy - a learning initiative supporting Europe’s future aviation and ATM workforce. The mission is to nurture Europe’s brightest minds and advance learning, scientific excellence and innovation in aviation and ATM.
