But to unleash its full potential requires making AI applications explainable and with that trustworthy, says Mobyen Uddin Ahmed, Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence/Computer Science at Mälardalen University, Sweden, and project coordinator of ARTIMATION.

SESAR 3 JU discusses new working relationship with Finnish and Swedish partners

On 21 and 22 March, Richard Frizon, Executive Director ad interim, travelled north to meet founding members, VTT in Finland, and LFV in Sweden, to discuss with them the new working relationship and common vision for delivering the Digital European Sky. The visit to Sweden was also an opportunity to meet Anne-Marie Ragnarsson, Chair of the SESAR 3 JU’s new States' Representatives Group and her colleagues from the Swedish Transport Agency.

SESAR partners validate speech recognition tech for tower controllers

SESAR 3 JU member, DLR, together with air traffic controllers from AustroControl and Oro Navigacija, recently validated an assistant-based speech recognition system to support controllers working in future multiple remote tower centres. The validations are part of the project "Digital Technologies for Tower" (PJ05-W2-97 DTT), which is developing new technologies for airport towers, particularly in the area of remotely controlling multiple airports and innovative human-machine interfaces.

SESAR 3 JU multi-annual work programme now published!

The SESAR 3 JU has published its multi-annual work programme, covering the research and innovation (R & I) activities foreseen between now and 2031. Adopted by the SESAR 3 JU Governing Board, the work programme provides a comprehensive view of the policy context for the innovation programme, as well as activities needed to deliver the Digital European Sky, according to the timeframe of the European ATM Master Plan.

CORUS-XUAM U-space for urban air mobility demonstration campaigns get off the ground!

After twelve months of intense preparation work, the first set of demonstrations of SESAR 3 JU CORUS-XUAM project got underway in March in France and Spain, with more sets of demonstrations planned until the end of the year in Italy, Belgium, Germany, UK, France and Sweden.

Calling all SESAR projects: Submit your ideas for SESAR Walking Tours

Submit your proposals for this year’s SESAR Walking Tours programme, which will take place at the World ATM Congress from 21 to 23 June 2022. The tours aim to give press and VIPs a chance to meet with the range of stakeholders that make up the SESAR 3 JU community and see first-hand the wide variety of solutions that are being developed, delivered and deployed across Europe.

Call for papers – “Towards Sustainable Aviation” Summit

A call for papers has been published for the “Towards Sustainable Aviation” Summit, which takes place from 18 to 20 October 2022, in Toulouse, France. Organised by 3AF, the French Aerospace Society, this international conference will bring together stakeholders from across the aeronautical ecosystem to discuss the pathway to carbon neutral aviation.
Those interested are invited to submit paper abstracts by 15 May.

SESAR 3 JU members test satellite-based precision aircraft landing

Late last year, SESAR JU members and partners of the DREAMS large-scale demonstration project conducted live trials of a series of satellite-enabled solutions at Twente Airport in The Netherlands. While the primary focus was enhancing arrival operations, the trials also allowed researchers to fine-tune the technology underpinning satellite-based precision approaches.

SESAR 3 JU partners validate safe integration of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS)

In March, SESAR 3 JU founding member, Indra, organised a virtual open day to present the results of research into enabling the safe integration of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) in controlled airspace (PJ.13, Solution #117). The research is part of the activities of the SESAR/Horizon 2020 project, ERICA.

Engaging airspace users on CPDLC for trajectory-based clearances

SESAR 3 JU founding member, EUROCONTROL, recently held a workshop with pilots from Novair and Airbus to explore the use of controller–pilot data link communications (CPDLC) to deliver trajectory-based clearances for the purpose of conflict resolution in high complexity airspace.
