Message from Florian Guillermet

The coronavirus (COVID-19) is impacting the lives of each and every one of us, prompting us to do all that is necessary to safeguard our immediate family and loved ones. It is also having a devastating impact on the aviation sector and its employees across all areas of the value chain.

European partners deliver first ‘FLY AI’ report on the current use and future potential of artificial intelligence in aviation
The ‘FLY AI’ report provides a timely review of the current use of artificial intelligence (AI) in aviation, and assesses its future potential to transform the sector. Produced by the European Aviation High Level Group on AI, the report pools the expertise of a wide range of key representatives from all aviation sectors, including the SESAR JU.

New SESAR exploratory research projects to advance digital air traffic management
The SESAR Joint Undertaking will soon kick off a total of 29 new exploratory projects within the framework of the SESAR 2020 research and innovation programme. The projects will cover a wide range of topics aimed at fostering new and innovative ideas on the digital transformation of air traffic management (ATM) in Europe. A total of EUR 38.5 million is earmarked for the research from the EU’s Horizon 2020 budget.

Domino project: network analysis
The Domino project has provided new insights into the use of network metrics (trip and passenger centrality, Granger causality and causality in tail) to analyse the impact of introducing new mechanisms in the ATM system. Domino has developed a full agent-based model, which captures the behaviour of key stakeholders (such as airlines and airports). It models a full day of operations at the ECAC level for both flights and passengers. Three mechanisms (4D trajectory adjustment, flight arrival coordination and flight prioritisation) have been assessed.

Innovation in aviation: The Digital Sky Challenge through the eyes of the winners
ACI EUROPE and the SESAR JU, with the support of key aviation partners, organised the Digital Sky Challenge on 2-4 December 2019 in Athens. Hosted by Athens International Airport, the event was Europe’s first 48-hour competition taking place at an airport premises. Find out the about the three winning teams, their experience and plans for the solutions they developed.
