FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - Mardi Gras events are happening all across the state including right here in the Tennessee Valley.

The Department of Foreign Language at the University of North Alabama hosted a multi-cultural Mardi Gras celebration.

Students and faculty served traditional Mardi Gras King Cake along with other treats from around the world.

The event was hosted by several foreign language clubs. German professor Rebecca Linam said many cultures celebrate this holiday.

“A lot of times people think it’s only in Louisiana but it originated all over the world and sometimes we kind of forget that there’s other cultures that celebrate this and they have their differences but they’re really not that different when you get to know the other cultures,” Linam said.

Mardi Gras as we know it, was started in Mobile in 1703.
